Challenges faced by student nurses and midwives in clinical learning environment – A systematic review and meta-synthesis

This systematic review aimed to offer insight and understanding, through synthesis of findings from studies that report on perspectives student nurses/midwives, clinical instructors, nurses/midwives the challenges faced by in learning environment (CLE). All primary qualitative research published English language reported views instructors CLE were included. The electronic databases Medline EBSCO (1946-), CINAHL (1970), Embase Ovid (1974-), ScielO, WHOLIS (2002-), ASSIA (1985-), Web Science (1956-), PsycINFO (1800s-) Maternal Infant Care (1970-) searched November 2019. Retrieved papers reviewed independently two authors for selection title, abstract full text, agreed inclusion papers. COREQ criteria checklist was used assessment methodological quality included studies. 32 over 22 years between 1997 2019 involving 853 nursing/midwifery students, 14 countries. Three key themes emerged: ‘The support structure’, ‘Personal factors’, ‘Planning organisation – influence extrinsic factors’. Attitude staff, significant others had a major students' learning. Lack sense belongingness self-motivation learn, perceived fear doing errors some demotivating factors. resources facilitate need-based training, staff shortages, workload inconsistencies theory practice other CLE. Understanding students can help overcome barriers leading development competent confident nurses midwives.
